Volume 13 Issue 2
What are the best ways to stay informed on current events?
The most important thing in maintaining a grasp of current events is to deliberately search for balance in your source of material. Obviously, you must be an active reader; but the point I am making is that a real understanding of current events comes from having multiple sources of information.
The best way to accomplish this is to balance the front page (the actual events) with the editorial page. The authors of opinions pages generally have good insights into the hidden meanings and agendas behind the headlines.
The trick is to make sure that you seek out the opinions of writers from both sides of the issues. Keep in mind that everything in the media comes from a certain bias; conservatives are biased, liberals are biased, and even religious writers reveal a certain bias. Pushing through the events of the day and sorting out the various opinions and reactions to these events will usually give you a balanced perspective of current events.
The internet is a great source for seeking out various views. I recommend starting out with the Drudge Report. This site will lead you to most places of interest with regard to world affairs.
