Many people that call me nationwide for counseling by phone/Skype are hurting because of pretentiousness and hypocrisy. Being pretentious is attempting to impress by greater importance. There are two types of individuals that attend church. The first is genuine. The second is pretentious.
The genuine person is authentic. They do not “put on a front.” Wherever they are, they are the same in spirit, grace and attitude. A genuine person is sincere and without hypocrisy. They live a godly life glorifying Him in body and spirit. There is a consistency in their walk with God in every aspect of their life.
The pretentious person wears a mask for a smile. They pretend godliness. They know in their heart that they have many issues that need to be healed to be healthy spiritually, emotionally and relationally, but they learn how to be hypocritical to impress others. The pretentious person hurts those they are close to – mainly family.
If a child is raised by pretentious parents, he/she sees a double life. At home, strife and trouble reign. As the family is headed to church, there are threats that everyone must be on their best behavior. This can even be from a pastor’s home. This causes spiritual and emotional problems that carry into adulthood. It creates a distorted God concept because parents’ actions are the first teachers about God. Children need to see true godliness by righteous conduct in the home.
Man does look on the outward appearance. But what is most important, God looks on the heart! My prayer is Psalm 139:23-24 (MSG), “Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong — then guide me on the road to eternal life.”
If you are struggling because of pretentiousness, there is help through God’s truth. When we know and practice God’s truth, we can be set free.
